When my father became a bush

From the age of 8
“When my father became a bush and I lost my name, we lived somewhere else. I didn't think it was 'somewhere else' back then. There was “somewhere else” everywhere, but not where we lived...”
With these words begins the adventurous story of the girl Toda, in whose home country a war begins. Her father, who is actually a pastry chef, has to leave and learn how to become a bush in order to camouflage himself and how to defend himself against others. Toda is sent alone to “somewhere else”, to the neighboring country, to her mother. She has to flee across the border. But what does a border look like?
On her way she encounters, among other things, a money-grabbing trafficker, a commander who can't give orders and suddenly people are talking strangely and there is no one left who understands Toda. But Toda doesn't lose heart and finds a new home.
Using chalk and puppets, the escape story is told from the perspective of little Toda. The production, based on the children's book “When my father became a bush” by Joke van Leeuwen and recommended by the UN Refugee Agency, is an invitation to the audience to share in the excitement of this strong young heroine, to develop empathy for her situation and to help shape the action on stage.
